Perfecting the Art of Photographing Wine
In my search to find out the best ways to photograph difficult products I have photographed a good number of bottles discovering which ones are more receptive to what kinds of light, this bottle has the text and logos printed directly on the bottle making it especially challenging. Normally I would use a large soft source from the camera left side to make the liquid within glow and evenly light the logo. However with this bottle when I did that the text on the back shower through clearly which was very distracting. I decided to instead leave the liquid a dark red and light the front logos and leave the bottle sitting in a pool of light. This was achieved by hanging a strobe over the top of the bottle slightly in front of the bottle with a 7” reflector and grid. This prevented the light from spreading out across the whole table, aiming it directly at the logos and text on the face of the bottle making a high contrast image. To add additional visual interest I added a diagonal stripe of red light to the background with a gelled flashgun.
