While trying to get out of a creative rut I decided to give myself a bit of a challenge: go out for a hike in the woods with the intention of taking photos, but only bring an 85mm prime lens. While the weather wasn't the most cooperative for getting interesting images, I managed to find some inspiration amongst the trees and create a few compositions.
Looking back through many of my images from the first half of this year I stumbled upon a series of images from an outing just after a snowstorm that I never posted while the images aren’t the best ones from my first Winter in New Hampshire, the story of revisiting a location I had previously photographed in the Fall made for what I find to be an interesting story.
During a product photography shoot at the beginning of this last spring I was looking for exciting ways to create additional visual interest in some of the the shots. With the limitation of not being able to take the item with me out into the world I sought to create some beautiful images using a hand crafted sword.
With Fall coming to a close and the last of the leaves falling off the trees I decided to go out and capture the color before it's gone for the year.
With a recent wave of body positive videos and articles of people wearing body paint and body glitter out in public a friend of mine wanted to give the concept a shot and do a photo shoot wearing a shirt made of glitter.
When I got a new phone it seemed the perfect occasion to photograph a cell phone in a way I had never seen before. I wanted to show off the fact that the phone is moisture resistant, so decided to photograph it floating in a cloud of mist.
As my time in the North-East progressed as did the changing of the leaves. In my last weeks there the whole world seemed to be on fire in reds, yellows, and oranges. I took a beautiful hike up to a remote fire tower to see the expansive views of the leaves as they began to reach their peak of colorfulness.
Nearly every chance I got I was out on the lake, the mild weather made for perfect days out on the boat or just enjoying the sound of the water at the beach.
One day while looking through my portfolio I realized I didn’t have a single photo of food, and decided I need to change that.
At this point in experimenting with product photography I decided to try making my background completely in photoshop, making it possible to replace it with anything I wanted.
In my search to find out the best ways to photograph difficult products I have photographed a good number of bottles discovering which ones are more receptive to what kinds of light, this bottle has the text and logos printed directly on the bottle making it especially challenging.
This image was another photo spurred on by a hole in my portfolio, I realized that every product I had photographed was either unisex or geared towards male consumers. Hoping to rectify this I decided to photograph a cosmetic product.
These images were a result of my first ever shoot with the Flashpoint Xplor 600, my most powerful light to date.
This image was inspired by a video I saw produced by the fstoppers where they talked about creative ways to photograph wedding rings.
One of my favorite places in Berkeley to go for a walk is the Wildcat Creek Trail at the Tilden Little Farm, it isn’t the most exciting hike in the Berkeley hills, but it so easily and conveniently accessible that I find myself frequently taking friends and family there.
There’s little I love more than photography in the snow, the high contrast provided by the bright snow and clear skies make for some truly ethereal images.
