Adding Food to my Portfolio

One day while looking through my portfolio I realized I didn’t have a single photo of food, and decided I need to change that. I prepared a simple meal of rice, fried tofu, steamed broccoli, and steamed carrots. Keeping all the ingredients separate I painstakingly assembled a bowl, using aluminum foil to perfectly portion hummus into a quarter of the vessel. I arranged the ingredients carefully to create the broken symmetry that I’m so fond off, mirroring that same pattern on the table with utensils and raw ingredients. I had already planned to add a body of text to the image in post, so I left space for it in my composition.

In order to get a nice soft even light I bounced flash off of a white wall to create a massive light source to evenly light the scene. However there were still unsightly shadows and underexposed areas. Using a white sheet of paper I took several more images, bouncing light back into the shadows in various places, negating one shadow at a time so that I could merge the various exposures together into one evenly lit image.
