Trying My Hand at Photographing Makeup
This image was another photo spurred on by a hole in my portfolio, I realized that every product I had photographed was either unisex or geared towards male consumers. Hoping to rectify this I decided to photograph a cosmetic product. After going through all of a friend’s makeup I settled on some eyeliner from a more edgy brand that would work well with something different from the high key images that most cosmetic companies use.
I spent a half hour lighting and extinguishing a candle photographing the smoke with flash coming from behind to illuminate the smoke on a black background so I could use blending modes to insert it into my composite image.
I used the same technique as my shoe photo to isolate and cut out the product so I could create a purple gradient in the background. In order to make the product feel like it was inside of the smoke I used one smoke image behind the product and another in front, adding a three dimensionality that makes the image feel so much more real.
